Support Staff at Alle-Kiski Medical Center Unite
Sandra SchrecengostUnit Secretary, ICU/CCU
I am so proud to say that we have formed our union. I have worked for many years at Alle-Kiski Medical Center and I know that together, we can make our jobs and the patient care we provide better. Now let’s join our nurse colleagues and fellow union workers across WPAHS, united for a strong contract and quality patient care!
On May 5th, 2010, 300 RNs from Alle-Kiski Medical Center (AKMC) in Allegheny County voted to join our union, thus strengthening their voice at the hospital and improving patient care. On the night of the nurses’ vote count, some of the support staff looked on with anticipation, and when the victory vote came in, enthusiastically
said “We’re next!”
It took exactly three months for this vision to become reality - on Thursday, August 5th, hundreds of support staff at AKMC came together and voted to form their union with SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania! Unity and perseverance led to a decisive majority and laid a strong foundation of support for their first contract. Standing together with fellow RNs, AKMC support staff won a critical victory for patients, employees, and the surrounding community.
