SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania, Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) and Heritage Valley Beaver (HVB) have received a Joint Labor and Management Grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Labor to provide this type of training at no cost to you.

Choose to attend one module or choose to attend all.  It doesn’t matter if you are a nurse at AGH or HVB, attend the trainings on any date at any location, whichever is most convenient for your schedule.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

Introduction to Lean Healthcare: 2 hours

Presenter: Barbe Jennion, RN Quality Care Training Coordinator, SEIU
Nurses face obstacles every day that interfere with their ability to give quality care to their patients.  This session is designed to help you understand how to remove those obstacles by using the quality improvement method Lean. 

  • Learn about the values and principles of Lean
  • Explore how Lean can be applied to healthcare
  • Discover a wide array of Lean healthcare tools
  • Determine how you can engage in quality improvement in your workplace 

 
Communication: 2 hours
Presenter: Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative
Effective communication is vital to the delivery of quality patient care.

  • Learn how you can utilize strategies that can be used to more effectively communicate between peers, managers and patients. 
  • Learn about the five components of communication and be able to identify their impact on work conditions.
  • Discover how the SBAR tool can improve a communication interaction
  • Discuss effective communication between workers of different generations and cultures
  • Create an action plan to address a communication problem.


Managing Conflict: 2 hours
Presenter: Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative
Conflict management involves implementing strategies to limit the negative aspects of conflict and to increase the positive aspects of conflict. Conflict can be valuable to groups and organizations and has been shown to increase group outcomes when managed properly.

  • strategies for appropriate conflict management
  • Understand four different levels of conflict
  • Discover the three “Ps” of managing conflict
  • Create a plan to constructively address conflict situations   


Teamwork: 2 hours

Teamwork in healthcare is increasingly advocated by health care policy makers as a means of assuring quality and safety in the delivery of services. The challenge is to get everyone to pull together and function as a team instead of going in separate directions.

  • Learn strategies that identify team type, address barriers to teamwork and assess individual’s roles and readiness
  • Define the essential elements of effective care teams
  • Discover the four components of a team
  • Identify the stages of team development and the needs of the team specific to  each stage
  • Apply the skills of a good team member to improve teamwork  


Problem Solving: 2 hours
Presenter: Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative
Problem solving is a mental process and is part of the larger process that includes problem finding and problem shaping. Problem solving should occur when there is need to move from a given state to a desired goal state.

  • Learn strategies for solving problem which identify everyday tools that can be used inside and outside of the workplace
  • Identify the problem-solving principles
  • Understand the Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) model for improvement
  • Apply the problem-solving principles and PDSA model to a specific work problem


Leading Improvement: 2 hours
Presenter: Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative
Leading improvement is about building the capacity and capability within your hospital teams to improve patient safety. 

  • Learn how to drive teams responsible for improvement within your unit
  • Learn strategies for delegating and inspiring interest in improvement initiatives
  • Understand the four steps of delegation
  • Discover the five “rights” of delegation
  • Apply three elements of effective leadership to an improvement initiative
